Reading
At Kings Oak PLC, reading is a huge part of our curriculum and learning across all subjects and we want to instil a love of reading in our pupils. We prioritise reading as a life-long skill but we also want children to experience the pleasure that reading can bring. As a school community, we discuss which texts we enjoy – pupils and staff alike – and share our recommendations with each other. We want children to see themselves as readers whether they read fiction, non-fiction, comics, graphic novels, blogs, instructions, recipes… the list is endless. We know reading gives them the opportunity to use their imagination to explore new ideas, visit new places and meet new characters.
Reading Ambassadors
Our Reading Ambassadors work towards promoting reading and reading for enjoyment across the school. They love to read, read books of different genres and authors and like sharing books and stories with others. They have lots of good ideas about how to get everyone reading across the school – even the staff!
The job of our Reading Ambassadors involves the following:
• Attending regular meetings during lunch times.
• Sharing recommendations and book reviews with the school.
• Working together to write a termly newsletter.
• Pre- reading new books from the library and writing reviews.
• Reading books to younger year groups.
• Helping to organise reading events for the whole school.
• Take part in assemblies to promote a love for reading across school.
• Design posters to promote our reading spaces and books.
• Taking trips to local libraries and book shops.

Bronte Tempestra of the Storm Kingdom is taking charge of her own destiny - she will be the first ever princess to become a knight. But knight school isn't the fun-filled adventure Bronte is expecting - the knights don't seem interested in saving anything. And when she discovers that the Lightning Steeds have gone missing, leaving the Thunder Trolls to wreak havoc across the lands, she knows it's her moment to prove just how brave a princess can be. Bronte must face down pompous griffin lords and cloud-stealing gnomes, monstrous horrorflies and spooky zombits. The future of the entire kingdom is at stake.
Year 5 & 6- Zoom call with the Author Jess French
We're excited to tell you that the children in year 5 and 6 are participating in a Zoom event with Jess French! It's all part of some literacy work around her new book Beastlands- Race to Frostfall Mountain. There might even be opportunity to ask a question at the end!
Beastlands- Race to Frostfall Mountain is the first instalment in an epic new fantasy adventure series for readers of DRAGON REALM, FIREBORN and SKANDAR AND THE UNICORN THIEF. It has an environmental twist, celebrating conservationism and the idea that adventure and exploration are a kind of education. The island of Ramoa was once luscious and populated with mighty beasts. Now though, it is home to barren and tamed cities, where nature is locked out and trouble
is brewing. When Kayla's beloved animal companion, a rare winged pangron, is stolen, she's determined to get him back. But
to do so, she'll have to leave her city and journey into the wild and forbidden Beastlands.
