COVID-19 Catch-up Premium
Children and young people across the country have experienced unprecedented disruption to their education as a result of coronavirus (COVID-19). Those from the most vulnerable and disadvantaged backgrounds will be among those hardest hit. The government has announced £1 billion of funding to support children and young people to catch up. This includes a one-off universal £650 million catch-up premium for the 2020 to 2021 academic year to ensure that schools have the support they need to help all pupils make up for lost teaching time.
Kings Oak Primary Learning Centre recognises that all children have been disadvantaged during the pandemic, therefore, will not just be using the catch-up grant as a resource, but will continue to effectively use allocated resources to ensure children receive first quality teaching and learning. We have risen to the challenge of providing a strong remote learning package, but are very aware every child’s learning experience has been varied. We are now faced with the challenge of ensuring all children are able to catch up on their lost learning, support their emotional needs and prepare them with the skills and knowledge required to have the best opportunity to succeed in later life.
Allocation
School allocations will be calculated on a per-pupil basis, providing each mainstream school with a total of £80 for each pupil in years reception through to 11.
Kings Oak Primary Learning Centre will receive £32,400 for the 2020/21 academic year.
Schools should use this funding for specific activities to support their pupils to catch up for lost teaching over the previous months, in line with the guidance on curriculum expectations for the next academic year. Schools have the flexibility to spend their funding in the best way for their cohort and circumstances.
At Kings Oak Primary Learning Centre we have carefully considered the areas that would most benefit from this additional funding. The key areas of focus are:
- Commitment to highly trained staff to support pupil’s well-being
- Re-establishing boundaries and rules and expectations
- High quality diagnostic and formative assessment
- Curriculum equity
- High-Quality Teaching and Learning
- Bereavement support
- Keeping high levels of staffing to support the above

The school believes that first quality teaching is the key to ensuring children catch up on their learning. Investment through high-quality professional development, coaching and mentoring through effective feedback from observations will ensure teaching and learning is secure through school.
The programme is not a quick fix, but will over the academic year 21/22 attempt to address the gaps in every child’s learning.
