Physical Education
Vision
Intent
Good physical and mental health is one of our key curriculum drivers. PE at Kings Oak Primary Learning Centre aims to develop the knowledge, skills and capabilities necessary to support the mental, emotional, social and physical wellbeing of our children now and in their future. We aim to instill a lifelong interest in sport, active lifestyles and physical and mental well-being. Our intent is to deliver high-quality teaching and learning opportunities that inspire all children to succeed in physical activities and become physically confident. To learn self-discipline, respect, team work and that to be successful you must work hard, show resilience and have the determination to believe that anything can be achieved. In addition, children learn the importance and value of cooperating and collaborating with others, as part of a team, and an understanding of fairness and equity of play. We develop young leaders who are able to organise and officiate a range of sporting activities. We aim to ensure our children can swim at least 25 metres before the end of Year 6 and know how to remain safe in and around water.
Implementation
Pupils at Kings Oak Primary Learning Centre participate in high quality PE and sporting activities. Our PE programme incorporates a variety of sports to ensure all children develop the confidence, tolerance and the appreciation of their own and others’ strengths and weaknesses. We provide opportunities for all children to engage in extra-curricular activities before, during and after school, in addition to competitive sporting events. We actively engage in a broad range of borough wide sporting events and competitions working closely with local secondary schools and the Barnsley School Games organiser. This is an inclusive approach, which endeavours to encourage not only physical development but also well-being. All children in Year 4 have swimming lessons with any children who cannot swim 25m having an additional opportunity in Year 5.
Impact
Children will be physically confident and have developed both the physical and personal skills to participate in a range of sporting activities. They will know the contribution of PE to leading a healthy lifestyle and have the interest and self-discipline to take responsibility for their own health and fitness.
